Founded on a Basis of Technical Innovation
A booming business in security, Sonitrol actually got its start as a pest control company in the early 1960s. Hailing from Anderson, Indiana, Robert Baxter began installing microphones within the walls of buildings to tune into the whereabouts of termites and pinpoint their location. As his business grew, he invented and implemented other sound-related devices as well. On June 16, 1960, Robert integrated “Sonitrol,” coming from the words sound and control, to manufacture and market his innovations. As of 1964, Sonitrol Security became a reality.
Rooted in Law Enforcement
In 1963, Robert Baxter met Al Cronk, a police chief who also owned an alarm company. Frustrated, Al was burdened with security systems that seemed to let perpetrators get away, time and time again. In addition, the continued false alarms from unverified motion sensors and glass break detectors were running his agency ragged. So, he looked to Robert. As a successful inventor, Robert developed innovative ideas for the alarm company. One of these innovations – the live audio sensor – became the hallmark of the company’s intrusion detection technology, and Robert coined the word, “Sonitrol,” combining the words sound and control, to manufacture and market his innovations. As of 1964, Sonitrol Security became a reality.
